I've never hurt myself in any way shape or form on a uni, and never even
touched the ground with my hands except once or twice while learning
kick-up mounts. (Don't get jealous, guys, I was also the slowest
learner!) So I've never used my helmet on the unicycle...

It makes it a lot easier to control if you cna just grab the seat with
your legs, squeeze, and turn. Don't think that'd work with a swivelling
seat. How do you make sharp turns?
